美しい英単語？

pleasant と Ivanhoe

個人的に、好きな単語は pleasant。
一番美しいかどうかは別として。

I had a pleasant time.

これで、pleasant の意味を「楽しい」と覚えている人は多いかもしれません。

だが、pleasant は中々奥が深い。

Longman（4th）の定義。

enjoyable or attractive and making you feel happy

COD（7th）では、

giving a sense of happy satisfaction or enjoyment

一言では表せない。
とにかく happy にさせてくれるのは間違いなさそう。

さて。

サー・ウォルター・スコット（Sir Walter Scott 1771-1832）の「アイヴァンホー （Ivanhoe）』。
この小説の書き出しには、plesant が２回出てきます。

In that pleasant district of merry England which is watered by the river Don, there extended in ancient times a large forest, covering the greater part of the beautiful hills and valleys which lie between Sheffield and the pleasant town of Doncaster.

なんとも素晴らしい文章。

この難解な小説には何度もチャレンジし、同じ数だけ挫折したので、pleasant を見るといつもこの文を思い出す。

一応、英文解釈。

that は後ろに関係詞があることを明示する単語。

He ruled only that small part of France which is called Normandy.

merry England の merry は England の枕詞のようなもの。

楽しきイングランド, メリーイングランド《昔からの呼称；産業や都市が発達する以前をなつかしんでいう》.

楽しい英国《古代からある呼び名》．★ この merry 元来の意味は「《廃》心地よい」であった。
― 研究社「新英和大辞典」

前にある pleasat も「心地よい」という意味があり、merry と響き合う。
そういう効果を出すために、pleasant という単語を使ったのか？

「楽しきイングランド」
ん・・・。
merry は訳さなくてもいいかもませんね。
訳すなら、「我らのイングランド」　「かのイングランド」かなぁ・・・。

さて、which の先行詞は何か？

普通に考えれば、直前の England。
だが、which is watered by the river Don と限定されている。

ドン川はイングランド全域に流れているのか？
そしてこの water は「（土地を）灌漑する、潤す」という意味。
イングランド全域を潤す川なんてないでしょう。

このドン川はどこら辺を流れているのか、調べても不明。

ヒントになるのは、英文に出てくる Sheffield（シェフィールド）とDoncaster（ダンカスター）の位置。

まあ、そこら辺を流れているのでしょう。チョロチョロと。いや、悠々と。

よって、which の先行詞は、district となる。

イングランドのうち、ドン川が土壌を潤している pleasant な district、という構造。

district は英国の「自治区」かもしれませんが、「地域・一帯」でもいいと思います（というか、それで済まします）。

次。

古代には、広大な森林に覆われていた

この there には「場所の観点がなく、形式的な役割を果たしている（『ジーニアス英和辞典』）」だけで、「そこに（は）」という意味はない。

There once lived in Greece a very wise man.
昔、ギリシアに非常に賢い人が住んでいた。

不思議な事件が起こった。

ですから、

there extended in ancient times a large forest,

を元に戻せば、「In ancient times a large forest extended.」となり、there は消える。

日本でもお馴染みとなった「昔々、あるところに」の件。

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess.
昔々、あるところに美しい王女様が住んでいました。

「あるところに」は there の意味ではない。
文章として、「あるところに」がないと、「なんか・・・こう・・・」なので付けたのではないでしょうか？

分詞構文ですね。

書き換えると、

hill と valley の解説。『ジーニアス英和辞典』より。

hill　《英》では標高600メートルぐらいまでのものをいう；日本語の「山」は hill に相当するものが多い。

valley　日本語の「谷」よりも比較的なだらかで広いところをいうことが多い。

映画『The Sound of Music』のオープニングのような風景でしょうか？

訳すなら、「山々」 「平原」でいいでしょう。

which の先行詞は hills and valleys。

Dancaster は the pleasant town of と形容されています。
一方、Sheffield は裸のまま。

どうしてでしょうか？

おそらく、対比かと。
Sheffied といえば、昔からの大都市。
一方、Dancaster は昔はのどかな田舎町だったのでしょう。

それに。
Sheffied や Dancaster の間だけが森林に覆われえていたはずはない。

大と小、繁栄とのどかさ、そういう対比なのではないでしょうか？

大都市シェフィールドと、田舎町なれども住み心地のよいダンカスター。その間に広がる風光明媚な一帯は、イングランドの中でもドン川のおかげで土地が潤っている。平原や山々で起伏が多く美しいが、古代にはほとんどが森林に覆われていた。

pleasant district の訳に苦戦。
一応、風光明媚としましたが、なんだかしっくりせず。
